In honor of Black History Month, BWL attended an insightful discussion at the Skirball Cultural Center, “Passing the Torch from Selma to Today.” The panel included Andrew Young, former UN Ambassador, Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr., Dr. Clarence B. Jones, and James Perkins Jr., Selma’s first African American Mayor. Panelists reflected on how the march from Selma to Montgomery led to the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and what we can do to transform unjust public policy today.
