On April 27, 2017, as part of the CABL Conference, BWL, CABL, Langston and the California Minority Counsel Program hosted a joint CLE called Seeking Balance in an Unbalanced World: Disrupting Stress and Bias Through Everyday Anywhere Mediation Practices. East Bay Community Law Center Executive Director Tirien Steinbach led a discussion about meditation and conducted a meditation exercise, which was very calming. Professor Steinbach shared advice from her mom, a practicing Buddhist: “Meditation is about liberation.” She added that if it’s about liberation, black people need to be there! Professor Steinbach suggested that when we are feeling stressed, we should: take a mindful moment, do a body scan (what’s going on with my body right now?), and/or try a walking meditation focused simply on breathing in and out (perhaps with a gratitude practice mixed in). The session was interesting, informative and enlightening.
